In 3/4B we all want to be amazing writers. We decided that great writing comes from having great ideas, but we needed to practice more on getting great ideas. These past two weeks, we have been practicing brainstorming!
We have used all sorts of different techniques: Mindmaps, iPad Apps, Drawing, Colouring, Writing, anything that helps us get our ideas down. We also learned that every idea counts and that we shouldn’t get rid of an idea if we think it is not as clever as the rest. We decided that brainstorming should NOT be perfect.
One of the crazy techniques that Mrs Murphy had us try was becoming a character for the topic we are brainstorming. This weeks topic was: Should we grow our own vegies. We either had to agree or disagree and then write a speech from our character. We then shared our speeches with each other.
One of our favourite characters was Anna’s Irish Farmer (I wonder where she learned the accent from?)

To Anna,
I like the Irish accent because you aren’t Irish.

Hi Anna,
What a great video you did! You thought of some excellent reasons why we should grow our own veggies. Where did you find your information? You did a great job looking at the camera and checking your notes while you were speaking.

Dear Anna, I really enjoyed your brainstorm. I could tell from your performance that you enjoyed it and had lots of relevant information. I might try it with my year 1 class some time. Keep up the great work! Mrs M
Hi 3/4B! I’m loving the blog, and have learnt more this morning about what you are up to in class than I have been told all year! Brainstorming is SUCH an important skill to develop and you can keep improving how you do it your whole life. I wonder if anyone can remember the brainstorming acronym we used last year to help us with brainstorming? (I’ll give you a hint -the letters are D.O.V.E., but what did they mean?)
Dear mrs Bernardo,
The 4s dont know what the brain storming D.O.V.E is. Can you tell us.
Please.
From Gabby

Dear 3/4B, I have given clues to 7 fabulous class members. When you can find some time, they need to put together the pieces of the puzzle, and then you will all know what DOVE stands for. You could even find some blu tak and each person puts their piece up on the board.
Try semi-colon and close brackets for the winky smiley face Mia. Colon and close brackets makes a normal smiley face. And if you use a semi colon and a capital P, then you are being cheeky!
Hi Anna
i don’t think that you know most of my family is ireish

Dear 3/4, here it is – one great brainstorming idea.
Defer Judgment – accept all ideas at the start;
Offbeat/Original – see how unique your ideas can be;
Vast number – get lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of ideas.
Expand/Elaborate – once the ideas are down, use them to get better and more detailed ideas.
Enjoy brainstorming!

Hi Anna,
Your Irish accent was really cool. Thank you for putting it up on the blog.
